About FMNS Sustaining Members PDF Print E-mail

The eleven independent Farmers’ Markets listed to the left are member-owners of a cooperative business - Farmers' Markets of Nova Scotia Cooperative Ltd - dedicated "Promoting and supporting farmers' markets in Nova Scotia, and encouraging them to prosper".

FMNS Sustaining Members strive to accomplish this by providing affordable retail space in excellent environments for the direct sale of local goods in locations throughout the province. And by promoting and supporting more than 400 Nova Scotia direct sale businesses who are members of their markets.

Collectively our markets contribute significantly to the economic support of Nova Scotia producers and their communities. Throughout Nova Scotia, Farmers' Markets are successfully providing smaller Nova Scotia farmers and food producers, artisans and artists with an opportunity to sell quality products locally. The economic value of these sales to the NS provincial economy was estimated at more than $62 million in 2004.

In many Nova Scotia communities, farmers' markets are key components of local economic development strategy because they regularly bring shoppers to other nearby businesses and they bring local businesspeople together with their customers in a weekly community celebration of local enterprise.

Beyond that, the economic value of Farmers' Markets includes the public health and environmental benefits of building local markets for whole foods and other goods produced locally. When you add to that our value as informal public education venues, with 12-14,000 socializing customers in our member markets every week May-October, and 4-6,000 people involved weekly the rest of the year, it's easy to see why...
